The Open Road Royal Deluxe features a roan leather sweatband and a 4 ¼” crown outfitted with a grosgrain hat band and branding-iron hat pin bearing the initials “JBS”, a nod to our founder, John B. Since 1948, it has been finished with a traditional, hand-pressed cattleman crease, and has been worn by modern pioneers and trailblazers ever since, from artists and outlaws to Presidents (including, most notably, LBJ, who was rarely photographed on his Texas ranch without his Open Road). Introduced in 1937, the Open Road was originally sold with an open crown, which could then be creased to the customer’s liking. Like all Open Roads, the Royal Deluxe easily transitions from city to country, and looks equally sharp on a woman or a man. The Royal Deluxe owes its signature suppleness to a proprietary fur-felt blend, which gives the hat a forgiving fit and allows the brim to be snapped up or down. I like it so much that I'm having him make me another just like it but with the Western styling.Handcrafted in the U.S.A., the Open Road Royal Deluxe is known for its lighter weight, softer, more supple feel, and a flexible finish- making it a slightly dressier alternative to the stiffer, more substantial Open Road 6X. Heck, you can even get a brand-new one made just for you! I *really, really* like the custom OR-Style Fedora that Art made for me back in the Spring. So, there are several brands of OR-Style hats out there if you can't readily acquire a Stetson one. However, I *do* need a much larger sample size before I can figure all this out for myself, of course! In time, in time, grasshopper! This is a disease that does not require an immediate cure (which is to buy hats until you're sick of them, I think). Gee, it almost makes sense! lolĪlso, I have yet to acquire a Stetson 'One-Hundred' OR, which I am willing to bet is nicer than any of the others! In this case, though, there is an improvement within the brand associated with the various markings. Of course, we all know how useless it is to compare those X's. Resistol 'XdoubleX' (so, is that two X's or four of 'em?) The order of 'niceness' (felt, sweatband, ribbon, build etc) goes as such: I have one regular Stetson OR and one 'Twenty-Five'. I have one 'No-X' and one 'XdoubleX' Resistol. I have two vintage Resistol OR-style hats, and two Stetson Open Roads.
